Tiers
How to create, configure, and manage membership tiers — names, thresholds, tags, and tier-specific settings.
Tiers segment your customers into groups with distinct benefits. Each tier has its own cashback rates, referral bonuses, wallet pass design, shortcuts, and experiential benefits. Customers move between tiers based on your program's enrollment qualifier.
Creating a Tier
On the Membership page, click Create new tier. Each tier requires:
Tier Name
The customer-facing name for this level (e.g., "Silver", "Gold", "The Cellar", "The Oak Society"). This appears on wallet passes, the Customer Account Extension, and in Klaviyo event data.
Spend Threshold (Spend-Based Programs Only)
The minimum cumulative qualifying spend required to reach this tier. Enter a dollar amount (e.g., $600.00). Customers are automatically placed into tiers as their qualifying spend crosses each threshold.
For tag-based programs, tiers are controlled by Shopify customer tags rather than spend thresholds — no dollar amount is needed.
Tier Tag
When you save the tier, Angle automatically generates a customer tag in the format MembershipName:TierName (e.g., "The Oak Society:The Cellar"). This tag is applied to qualifying customers automatically and cannot be changed after saving.
The tier tag is useful for:
- Targeting specific tiers in Klaviyo segments
- Building Shopify Flow automations based on tier membership
- Creating tier-specific product access or pricing rules in Shopify
Tier Structure Patterns
You can create up to 5 tiers per membership. Here are common patterns across different verticals:
Wine Brands
Typically 3 tiers with high thresholds and experiential benefits scaling at each level:
| Tier | Threshold | Key Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| The Cellar | $600 | Complimentary shipping on 3+ bottles, 10% off current vintage |
| The Vineyard | $1,200 | Everything in Cellar + early access to new wines, priority tastings |
| The Estate | $6,000 | Everything in Vineyard + preferred pricing on Release Day tickets, private events |
Outdoor / Active Lifestyle
Typically 2–3 tiers with graduated cashback rates:
| Tier | Threshold | Cashback |
|---|---|---|
| Explorer | $0 | 5% cashback |
| Adventurer | $250 | 7% cashback |
| Summit | $500 | 10% cashback |
Beauty / Cosmetics
Often 2 tiers for customers plus a separate tag-based employee program:
| Tier | Threshold | Key Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Member | $0 | 5% cashback, Give $10 / Get $10 referrals |
| VIP | $200 | 8% cashback, Give $25 / Get $15 referrals, early access |
What You Configure Per Tier
Each tier's edit page contains these sections:
1. Basic Settings
Tier name, spend threshold, and the auto-generated tier tag.
2. Apple & Google Wallet Pass
The branded digital membership card for this tier. Each tier can have its own colors, logos, and branding — so customers see a visually distinct pass when they upgrade. See Wallet Pass Design for configuration details.
3. Shortcuts
Links that appear on the back of the wallet pass. Add links to product collections, exclusive offers, support pages, or tier-specific landing pages. Each shortcut has a title, a link label (max 20 characters), and an HTTPS URL.
Shortcuts can be reordered using drag handles and are configured independently per tier.
4. Rewards
All reward types are disabled by default. Enable the ones you want to offer for this tier:
- Order-Based Cashback — Store credit as a percentage of each purchase or a flat amount. See Cashback.
- Referrals — Store credit when members refer new customers who make a purchase. See Referrals.
Reward values can (and usually should) differ by tier — higher tiers earn more cashback, bigger referral bonuses, etc.
How Tier Assignment Works
Spend-Based Programs
Angle continuously tracks each customer's cumulative qualifying spend. When a customer's spend crosses a tier threshold, they are automatically moved to the new tier. The tier tag is updated on their Shopify customer profile, their wallet pass updates in real-time, and Klaviyo receives a "Tier Changed" event.
The qualifying spend calculation tracks online purchases through Shopify, in-store purchases through POS, and off-platform purchases through receipt capture — all rolling up into a single total.
Tag-Based Programs
Customers enter a tier when their Shopify customer profile receives the appropriate tag. This can happen manually (staff adds the tag in Shopify Admin) or automatically (via Shopify Flow based on any trigger you define — subscription status, segment membership, etc.).
Managing Tiers
Reordering
Tiers are listed on the Membership page and can be reordered to control display order.
Editing
Click the pencil icon on any tier to access its edit page. You can change the tier name, spend threshold, wallet pass design, shortcuts, and reward settings.
Deleting
Click the trash icon to delete a tier. Exercise caution — deleting a tier affects all customers currently assigned to it.
After activating your program, you must disable it before editing any tier settings. The workflow is: Disable → Edit → Re-activate.
